National Knowledge Platform for Hydrogen: from prototype to proof of concept

At the start of this year EnTranCe, together with a consortium of universities of applied sciences and vocational institutions, delivered a protoype of the National Knowledge Platform. This platform is part of the Human Capital Agenda of GroenvermogenNL. The aim is to make current hydrogen knowledge available, accessible, and useful.

This gives shape to GroenvermogenNL’s vision on how to make hydrogen knowledge flow.

The aim of the National Knowledge Platform is to unlock and promote the practical application of (validated) knowledge through the hydrogen community. The knowledge stems from research (R&D), learning communities, pilot and demonstration projects and human capital studies. The National Knowledge Platform will become an accessible and well-structured platform where users can find the most up-to-date knowledge on green hydrogen through simple search queries.  You can find the prototype National Knowledge Platform here.

“Major steps are being taken for renewable energy and raw material supply, and developments in green hydrogen play an undeniable role in this. With the National Knowledge Platform, GroenvermogenNL is creating a strong beacon of independent, reliable, and immediately applicable knowledge that students and professionals can build ours and their sustainable future upon.”

Marcel Koenis, Director of Strategy and Development EnTranCe & Liaison Northern Netherlands

A digital, practical hub

With this platform, GroenvermogenNL aims to support professionals, lecturers, researchers, and students in their work, education and/or research. The knowledge platform functions as a digital hub: a practical connector which can easily guide users to relevant information, projects, and networks that are already active. It naturally takes into account developments in the hydrogen world at local, regional, and (inter)national levels and the many parties involved.

Source for knowledge, education, and training

The first step is unlocking knowledge. This will be realized in the initial phase of further development. Next, broader engagement and knowledge dissemination across the hydrogen community is planned. The search for appropriate educational and training opportunities for hydrogen-related jobs will be an integral part of the National Knowledge Platform. This means the (publicly available) knowledge and information in the platform will also serve as a source for Make Hydrogen Work.

“GroenvermogenNL is heavily investing in developing new knowledge so we can solve the challenges involved in building the hyrdogen economy. We feel responsible for making this knowledge widely accessible and applicable to everyone involved with hydrogen, as a part of our role in the Human Capital Agenda of GVNL. Our collaboration with Npuls and SURF gives us confidence that we are not just building a short-term solution, but a long-term one.”

Marsha Wagner, Program manager Human Capital Agenda GVNL

End of 2025: proof of concept

Together with the National Growth Fund programs Npuls and SURF, GroenvermogenNL will continue working together in the coming months on the digital solutions for the knowledge platform. SURF is exploring to what extent its services already support the platform’s needs and which need to be developed or combined.

The regional liaison teams and R&D consortia of GroenvermogenNL will start working with the platform’s functionality to integrate it into education and research. This will result in the first version (proof of concept) of the National Knowledge Platform by the end of this year. After that the platform will be scaled up to further ensure it is broadly deployable for both the hydrogen and energy transition. Among others, GroenvermogenNL will also collaborate with Topsector Energie.

“We can strengthen each other by joing forces, we make it possible to truly make a difference for te energy transition through education.”

Gerdinand Bosch, Program Director at Npuls

“SURF provides digital facilities required for education and research. We are eager to explore our options with GVNL and how our solutions can contribute to the National Knowledge Platform.”

Femke Mosch, Manager Education Services
