New R&D call: € 13 million subsidy for research into transport and storage of hydrogen

To fully capitalise on the Netherlands’ potential as a supplier to the Northwest European hydrogen market, a well-developed infrastructure for the import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers is essential. GroenvermogenNL is investing € 13 million in a new R&D call for research into hydrogen infrastructure. The call opens on 3 February, and an information session will be held on 5 February.

About the call

A well-functioning infrastructure is crucial to enable hydrogen to be used for a sustainable energy supply. Hydrogen must be transported from production sites and import hubs to the locations where it is needed.

That is why the development of techniques for the conversion of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, as well as for their transport and storage, is of great importance. Reusing existing infrastructure and smartly integrating new supply chains are also indispensable to make large-scale import of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers possible.

To tackle these challenges, more research is needed. This call focuses on themes such as import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, such as ammonia or liquid organic carriers.

Research themes

The research under this call focuses on three main areas:

  1. Import, transport and storage of liquid hydrogen (LH₂).

  2. Import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen carriers.

  3. Development and optimisation of port infrastructure, supply chains and conversion hubs.

Procedure: one consortium, one project plan

NWO will open the call for this theme on 3 February. From that moment, companies and research institutions can register to develop the proposal together and build the consortium. A single national consortium of companies and researchers will be formed to submit one joint project plan.

  • The industry’s needs are central to the research.

  • Companies can apply for subsidy (up to 40%).

  • There is no competition between individual applicants; parties work together on one plan.

  • Participants will take part in two workshops to help develop the project plan.

Information session on 5 February

GroenvermogenNL and NWO are organising an information session on 5 February. During this session, participants will receive all information about the call and how to take part in the R&D consortium. Registration is required.

  • Location: Haags Hoog, Televisiestraat 2, 2525 KD The Hague

  • Time: 14:00 – 17:30 hrs (including networking drinks)

Register for the information session.

About GroenvermogenNL’s R&D programme

To achieve large-scale use of green hydrogen in the Netherlands, we need innovative technologies for hydrogen production and for the chemical industry. The R&D programme of GroenvermogenNL connects parties in balanced, unique consortia to address pressing research questions. A total of € 177 million is available for this R&D programme, covering nine R&D projects. This R&D call concerns the eighth project.
