Participate in Hydrogen Emissions Measurements

TNO’s MEETH2 project was recently awarded a € 524,900 subsidy by GroenvermogenNL to catalogue hydrogen emissions in the Netherlands. The goal being to acquire more knowledge of emissions throughout the value chain with the aim of optimising processes and determining whether, and to what extent, additional policy is required for emission standards. TNO calls on stakeholders to participate in the measurements and to co-conceptualise the measurement approach.

For MEETH2, TNO is developing a measurement programme for hydrogen leaks that utilises mobile measuring equipment. The measurements’ focus is on existing sources, but also takes future systems for the hydrogen economy – which will increase in number and size – into account. TNO will use the results to quantify future H2 emissions and to assess how to integrate these into the permit issuing process. To this end, the project will start by developing an initial measurement protocol for a uniform approach to emission observation. The latter will be relevant to the enforcement of any possible future permit requirements.

State-of-the-art Measurement Tool

TNO has purchased a state-of-the-art, thus far not commercially available, H2 measuring tool to conduct the measurements. The technique employed is unique as the tool can rapidly conduct a large number of measurements without physical access to the potential emission sources as emissions can be detected from off-site positions.

Insights from the Measurement Programme

The measurement programme’s results provide insight into any possible differences in emissions between the various technologies or methods utilised in hydrogen processes. This is important for identifying, preventing or minimising emissions at new initiatives using optimum process or work procedure design. Moreover, this knowledge can be used to assess whether any hydrogen emission standards are perhaps required in permits. Finally, the measurements objectively assess the environmental safety of hydrogen operations.

Want to Contribute to H2 Emission Measurements?

Undertaking joint action is crucial to the MEETH2 project and serves to further the interests of all stakeholders in the hydrogen domain. Insight into H2 emissions is necessary to determine whether new or additional policies will be required. TNO therefore invites stakeholders to enter into dialogue concerning the MEETH2 measurement programme’s approach and to help harmonise a collaborative initiative.
