Research into support for green hydrogen in the future energy system
The transition to a future with large-scale use of green hydrogen not only requires technical innovation. Social support for green hydrogen and a favorable economic and regulatory environment are essential for such a transition. GroenvermogenNL’s HySUCCESS project aims to provide a comprehensive overview of which socioeconomic factors influence the potential role of green hydrogen in a sustainable energy system.
Emission reduction using green hydrogen
HySUCCESS stands for Social, User ACCeptable, Economically Sustainable Systems for Hydrogen. It is an initiative of a consortium consisting of 10 universities, five universities of applied science, one research institute, three industrial partners and an industry association. The research is aimed at supporting a socio-techno-economic environment that promotes the adoption of hydrogen in the sectors where hydrogen is the best solution to reduce emissions. For example, through the deployment of business economics lessons, proposed policy recommendations and regulatory frameworks, inclusion of regional labor market effects, understanding the drivers of public acceptance, and ensuring a just hydrogen transition.
Examining economic, legal, policy and sociocultural factors
The HySUCCESS researchers will first address the role of hydrogen in a carbon-neutral energy system. They will then assess what factors hinder or enable the economic feasibility of hydrogen business cases in the Netherlands. Third, the researchers will study legal frameworks and policy instruments that affect the feasibility of hydrogen options. Finally, the socio-cultural factors influencing the feasibility of hydrogen options, including public acceptance and labor market effects, will be identified. The HySUCCESS project will run until 2028.
The HySUCCESS consortium
The HySUCCESS consortium consists of Avans University of applied Science, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), Groningen University (UG), Hanze University of Applied Sciences (HUAS), University of Arnhem and Nijmegen (HAN), Radboud University (RU), Hogeschool Saxion, Tilburg University (TiU), Delft University of Technology (TUD), Leiden University (LU), Utrecht University (UU), University of Amsterdam (UvA), University of Twente (UT), TNO, Centrumj voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI/NWO-I), Battolyser Systems, Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman, KROHNE New Technologies.
Grant
GroenvermogenNL’s R&D program is divided into seven work packages. NWO conducts the calls for the work packages. The HySUCCESS project is the result of work package 7: Socio-economic aspects and implementation of hydrogen.
The HySUCCESS project receives a € 12 million grant with €1 million private contributions.
