Learning communities
Learning communities ensure skills transfer: new knowledge generated by research and innovation is used to develop skills for professionals and students. We encourage collaboration within project consortiums made up of companies, researchers, students, and lecturers (including research lecturers) from all relevant vocational and higher education institutions. Together, they develop approaches to the specific fields of research where innovation, learning and working come together.
Learning community: Hydrogen Lab
Given the size of its industrial sector, the Southwest region is facing a major climate challenge. For many years, numerous industrial companies in the North Sea Port area, such as DOW, Yara, and Zeeland Refinery, have been using hydrogen derived from natural gas. To achieve the goal of cutting CO2 emissions by 2050, a significant portion of this grey hydrogen must be replaced with green hydrogen in the upcoming years. Substantial investments and a large workforce of skilled professionals are essential for the transition to green hydrogen. To meet the latter need, HZ University of Applied Sciences and Scalda, a vocational training institution, have joined forces to establish the Hydrogen Lab. Here, students from vocational institutions and universities of applied sciences learn about hydrogen, while professionals have the opportunity to upgrade their skills. Funding from the Stichting Zeeuwse Publieke Belangen (Zeeland Public Interests Foundation) and GroenvermogenNL helped establish the space for practical lessons.

Learning community: Applied Research Team
The Applied Research Team (ART) in the East region brings together students and researchers to focus on developing knowledge, creating practical solutions, and sharing expertise. Their work is based on requests from the professional field. The ART is overseen by a supervisory board consisting of a lector (applied research), a trainer (practical research), and a PhD candidate (scientific research). Within ART, everyone works closely together, sharing knowledge and learning from one another. Furthermore, the mission is not restricted to research alone: the team develops resources and materials to transfer knowledge to teachers and professionals and so contribute to a better future.

Learning community: Greenwise campus
At the Greenwise Campus in the North region, the University of Groningen, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and Drenthe College collaborate with businesses. That enhances the innovative capacity and economic strength of the region, while also retaining local talent to benefit the area. Greenwise Campus focuses on the regional production of green hydrogen using alternatives to fresh water, such as seawater and sewage water. Greenwise Campus has constructed testing facilities to support their work. The hydrogen produced is used by local companies in the region.
