ECNS 2026 connects electrochemistry from fundamentals to applications

On Monday 11 May, the 3rd Electrochemical National Symposium took place in Utrecht. Under the theme ‘Electrochemistry - From Fundamentals to Applications’, scientists, researchers, PhD candidates and industry professionals came together to share the latest developments in electrochemistry.

This year’s edition was organised by GroenvermogenNL and Utrecht University / Debye Institute. The symposium created space for knowledge exchange, new connections and collaboration in a field that is becoming increasingly important for the energy and raw materials transition.

From fundamental knowledge to real-world applications

Electrochemistry plays an important role in the development of sustainable technologies. Think of energy storage, conversion, green chemistry and circular processes. During ECNS 2026, the connection between fundamental research and practical application was central.

That connection was visible throughout the programme: from research at molecular and materials level to technologies that are moving closer to application in practice.

Inspiring keynotes and focused deep-dives

The day featured a strong programme with inspiring keynotes from, among others, Peter Strasser of the Technical University of Berlin and Magda Titirici of Imperial College London.

Peter Strasser spoke about materials science and catalysis of nanostructured materials for clean energy storage and conversion. Magda Titirici focused on the development of carbon-based electrodes for sustainable energy storage and conversion routes.

Alongside the plenary sessions, specialised break-outs offered more in-depth discussion. In these sessions, keynotes and PhD pitches alternated. This brought real energy into the rooms: young researchers presented their projects, engaged with experts in the field and showed how broad and innovative electrochemical research in the Netherlands is.

PhD candidates in the spotlight

A key part of ECNS 2026 was the strong focus on young research talent. PhD candidates were given a platform to present their work, both in the break-outs and during the poster sessions. This not only showed the depth of the field, but also the new generation of researchers helping to move electrochemistry forward.

The pitches brought fresh perspectives, sharp questions and active exchange between researchers, companies and knowledge institutions. During the symposium, the three best posters were also honoured. A well-deserved recognition of the quality and commitment of the young researchers in the field.

Active atmosphere and a strong community

The atmosphere during ECNS 2026 was open, engaged and energetic. Participants actively connected with each other, asked questions during the sessions and continued the conversation during the breaks. This made the symposium more than a content-driven event: it was also a moment to strengthen the electrochemistry community in the Netherlands.

The combination of top-level keynotes, specialised sessions, PhD pitches and informal exchange showed how much momentum there is in the field.

Watch the aftermovie

We look back on a successful edition of ECNS, with strong speakers, active break-outs and plenty of room for new connections and ideas.

Watch the aftermovie above and the pictures below for an impression of the day.

With this third edition, another step has been taken in connecting fundamental knowledge with practical applications in electrochemistry – and in strengthening the people who make this possible.
