Project plan for imported green hydrogen: watch the video with the initiators
GroenvermogenNL has launched a new call, which is being implemented by NWO. The call is part of our R&D programme and focuses on the question of how the Netherlands can safely, efficiently and affordably import, convert, transport and store green hydrogen. This question is becoming increasingly relevant as global developments accelerate: countries where green hydrogen can be produced at low cost due to abundant wind and solar energy are making significant progress.
One consortium, one research proposal
Around 30 organisations have registered for the call. These include industrial companies, major Dutch ports, innovative start-ups, universities, universities of applied sciences and research institutes. Together, they represent the entire value chain of green hydrogen import, conversion, transport and storage. Their goal is to develop a single integrated research proposal based on challenges and questions from industry.
Solving challenges together
In April and May, the participants came together for two intensive workshops of two and a half days each to jointly develop the project proposal under the name HyIMPACT. How did the participants experience these workshops?“It is important to take the time to understand one another and gain insight into the challenges at hand,” says Timme van Melle, Senior Adviser at Energy Beheer Nederland. “That is why these sessions are so valuable.” David Smeulders, Professor of Energy Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology, agrees: “Our ability to bring together a community and an ecosystem to solve challenges collectively may well be one of the Netherlands’ greatest strengths.”
For the economy and the climate
The participants are convinced that much is at stake with this project. It is not only about future prosperity, security of energy supply and addressing climate change.“We also have the opportunity to establish a central position in North-West Europe for importing hydrogen and supplying it to neighbouring countries,” says René Peters, who works at TNO and serves as overall project leader of the new research project.

Timeline
The HyIMPACT consortium has until 9 July to submit its project proposal. If selected for funding, GroenvermogenNL will support the research project with a grant of €13 million. Industrial partners will also contribute financially to the project.
