The direct use of hydrogen phase 2

With budget from GroenvermogenNL, on April 3 2026 NWO openened the new call for proposals for the Direct Use of Hydrogen – Phase 2 theme. This consortium will focus on the direct use of green hydrogen (carriers) as a fuel for high-temperature processes and on other industrial use cases for green hydrogen (hybrid energy storage, data centers, and more). € 9 million in subsidies have been made available for this purpose.

Goal

To decarbonize the Dutch industry, further advancements in hydrogen use and hydrogen-based technologies across critical application areas are needed.

Phase 1 focuses on research into technology development for furnaces, gas turbines, internal combustion engines, and fuel cells, and on techno-economic aspects of various applications of hydrogen. In Phase 2, this work package will further focus on the direct use of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers as fuel for direct energy production and high-temperature processes, and on use scenarios for industries not covered in Phase 1.

Activities

The proposed research and innovation program for GroenvermogenNL Work Package 3 Phase 2 encompasses three areas:

  • Process heat (including ammonia)
    • Direct use of hydrogen as a fuel for high-temperature processes
    • Direct use of ammonia as a fuel for high-temperature processes
  • Direct hydrogen-to-power conversion technologies
  • Hybrid energy storage
