On Monday 8 May, approximately 30 representatives from knowledge institutions, companies and public organizations will gather for the first workshop in Work Package 3 (WP3) of the GroenvermogenNL R&D programme. Participants will be working on a joint proposal to accelerate the direct use of green hydrogen.

As part of the energy transition, the Netherlands wants to scale up the production and adoption of green hydrogen. The direct use of hydrogen could make sense in energy-intensive industries, such as for processes that require high temperatures. There are also opportunities in the mobility sector, such as electric propulsion with fuel cells or replacing fossil fuel in combustion engines. WP3 focuses on innovations for the direct use of green hydrogen, in which systemic aspects such as safety and social acceptance also play a role.

Joint project proposal by a single consortium

WP3’s first call opened at the end of 2022. Interested parties had until 16 February to register. After selection by an independent, international evaluation committee, the parties nominated representatives for the mandatory workshops. The aim was for participants to develop their innovative ideas for the direct use of green hydrogen into a single joint proposal and to form a single consortium for implementation. This approach is more likely to produce a suitable proposal than if individual parties or smaller consortia each worked on their own rival proposals. In March, GroenvermogenNL implemented this approach for the first time in WP2, focusing on the transportation and storage of hydrogen.

Workshops in May

There will be two workshops lasting 2.5 days, and they will take place on 8-10 May and at the end of May. With the support of process supervisors and independent specialist experts, the participants will get to know one another, explore the subject area and decide on a direction for the project proposal. At the second workshop, they will continue developing their proposal, which will be submitted by no later than 18 July. An independent committee will assess the quality of the consortium and the project proposal. A grant of up to €14 million is available for the proposal.

Would you like to join the consortium?

Are you interested in WP3’s call for the direct use of green hydrogen? Although it is no longer possible to register for the workshops, you can still join the consortium, depending on the content and structure of the project proposal. For example, you can contribute your knowledge as a partner or as a co-funder of the project proposal. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

GroenvermogenNL: accelerated adoption of green hydrogen The GroenvermogenNL programme is part of the National Growth Fund. It seeks to promote and accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen by Dutch industry, and focuses on R&D, pilot projects, demo projects and a Human Capital Agenda. A total budget of €838 million has been reserved for this, up to and including 2028.
